A 46-year-old Rockland County man was shot and killed Tuesday night on the George Washington Bridge in what investigators believe began as a near-collision on an entrance ramp. The gunman was still being sought Wednesday morning.

The victim, an off-duty Con Edison worker, was driving a blue Volkswagen Golf on a ramp leading to the westbound upper level when his car nearly struck another vehicle, sparking a dispute, ABC7 New York reported. As both cars continued toward New Jersey, someone in the other vehicle opened fire.

It was one shot. The bullet blew out the Golf's rear passenger window, hit the driver's seat headrest and then struck the man, law enforcement sources told NBC New York. His car kept going before stopping against the median near the middle of the span.

Port Authority police, who first answered what was called in as a one-vehicle crash, initially said the driver had been hit in the head. The NYPD later said the wound was to his shoulder, according to New Jersey 101.5. He was taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The other driver fled. Police have not released a description of the shooter or the vehicle, and investigators are going through surveillance video, WPVI reported.

The investigation shut the New Jersey-bound upper level shortly after 7 p.m. All lanes reopened at about 12:10 a.m. Wednesday.

As of Wednesday morning, authorities had not released the victim's name.
