The New York Yankees beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in ten innings at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, taking the opener of the series after a scoreless duel between starters gave way to a late exchange of home runs.
Max Fried held Atlanta hitless through the middle innings, allowing three hits and no runs over six and a third innings while striking out seven. He threw 90 pitches and walked two. Braves starter Tyler Mahle matched him almost exactly, giving up three hits and no runs over six innings with nine strikeouts.
Neither side scored until the eighth, when Austin Riley took Tim Hill deep to put Atlanta ahead 1-0. New York answered in the ninth with two runs off Raisel Iglesias, who recorded only two outs and gave up three hits before being pulled. Matt Olson responded with a home run off Fernando Cruz in the ninth to force extra innings at 2-2.
The Yankees pushed across the winning run in the tenth against Tyler Kinley, who took the loss. David Bednar earned the win with a scoreless inning on ten pitches.
Ryan McMahon led New York with two hits and a double, driving in a run. Austin Wells and Ben Rice each drove in a run. Both teams finished with seven hits and a .200 team average, though Atlanta committed the game's only error.
Ronald Acuña Jr. and Drake Baldwin each collected two hits for the Braves.
The two clubs meet again Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
