A man was shot to death Saturday afternoon on a subway platform in Midtown Manhattan, and police were still searching for the gunman on Sunday.
The shooting happened at about 12:21 p.m. on the northbound E train platform at the Seventh Avenue-53rd Street station, a few blocks north of Times Square. According to an NYPD statement, a man approached the victim, pulled out a gun and shot him once in the chest, then fled on foot north on Seventh Avenue.
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, WABC-TV reported. He was pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m., according to NBC News.
Police said the two men had been arguing. At a news conference, officials described a dispute that moved from the platform onto a train and then back onto the platform before the shot was fired. They stressed the attack was not random.
A witness, Hassen Pinchback of Orlando, Florida, told Fox News Digital that the gunfire rang out just as the train doors opened and that people on the platform ran. He said a woman began chest compressions on the victim before officers arrived.
The victim's name was not released pending notification of his family. Police described him only as a man in his 30s. The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect and asked the public for help identifying him.
The shooting also snarled weekend service. Uptown E trains were rerouted along the F line between West Fourth Street and Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue, and uptown D trains bypassed the station, WABC-TV reported, citing the MTA.
The station sits in one of the busiest stretches of the subway system, serving tourists, theatergoers and Midtown office workers. It also has a grim place in city history. In 1990, Utah tourist Brian Watkins was stabbed to death there while trying to protect his family during a robbery.
Anyone with information is asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
