Mayor Zohran Mamdani began a weeklong family vacation in upstate New York on Sunday and is scheduled to return Aug. 23, his office said.
First Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan will oversee day-to-day operations while the mayor is away, as required by the City Charter. Mamdani will continue to receive regular updates from senior staff, and the administration will proceed with its normal schedule of operations and public announcements, City Hall said. The mayor does not plan to hold public events during the week.
Mamdani declined to say where in upstate New York he would be staying, and City Hall did not provide a location.
The absence is a visible one. The mayor typically holds between one and four public events on a weekday, by NBC New York's estimate.
The trip comes as his administration faces scrutiny over the city's response to an attack Friday night at Central Synagogue in Midtown Manhattan, and over remarks about the incident by a former campaign staffer. Jewish leaders and critics of the mayor have continued to debate the city's handling of antisemitism in the days since. A suspect was charged with aggravated harassment and criminal mischief.
The week away also coincides with a legal challenge to the mayor's pied-a-terre tax, one of the signature measures of his first year in office. A ruling last week allowed the city to continue implementing the tax while the appeal proceeds, CNBC reported. Asked Thursday whether the timing of his trip was a coincidence, Mamdani laughed off the question, according to NBC New York.
Mamdani, 34, took office Jan. 1 as the 112th mayor of New York City. He previously represented Astoria and neighboring Queens communities in the state Assembly.
